Jeanette Schofield, President of the McM AITP Student Chapter, was the co-speaker at the AITP Big Country (Professional) Chapter monthly luncheon at the Abilene Country Club on Thursday, September 25th. She and a TSTC student spoke about this past summer’s Webvana computer camp for middle school students. There were 9 campers and 1 former camper that returned as a volunteer. The campers used Microsoft Word to create an invitation to an Open House for their parents and built a PowerPoint slide show to showcase their projects. They also worked with Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Excel, created a software calculator using Visual Basic programming, and built a Web page. They also had time to play their favorite Internet games and were visited by the “Geek Squad” from Best Buy. They finished the week with a field trip to the Abilene Zoo and Frontier Texas before the Open House.
This Thursday, October 2nd the McMurry AITP chapter will meet. A major item on the agenda is the Region 3 AITP conference to be held the weekend of October 23rd – 25th in San Angelo. Due to the generous support of conference sponsors, the Region 3 Conference Committee voted to waive all conference fees for student participants.
Student competition include programming, Microsoft Office, database, networking, and more. Students will be able to attend lectures on today’s current IT industry, and visit with prospective employers (companies such as USAA often set up tables at these conferences). We hope to take a good sized group to the conference in a few weeks.
