War Hawk Football Off to a Strong Start in SCAC Debut
With every new year comes change. That change for the McMurry football team was a new conference and attitude. Coming off an excellent 6-4 season that saw McMurry take eventual ASC champions Hardin Simmons to the wire, suffering a close 19-16 loss, the War Hawks rallied this momentum into a new season with a 3-1 record. McMurry currently stands at 3-0 in the new conference and is in a strong position to claim the SCAC conference championship.
After a close 24-20 loss to Southwestern, McMurry has closed out their last three games by a combined score of 113 to 25. Quarterback Jess Hoel currently leads the SCAC in passing yards, passing yards per game, and passing touchdowns. Hoel is presently 83 for 121 with 1,040 passing yards (13th in Division 3), 11 touchdowns, 1 interception thrown, and a QB rating of 169.14. Kristopher Martin, Thomas Chandler, and Kason O’Shields have been a lethal trio of receivers for the War Hawks. Martin currently leads the SCAC with 86.5 receiving yards per game, with O’Shields sitting at 5th with 51.5 yards per game. Chandler and O’Shields sit first and second in the SCAC in receiving touchdowns with 4 and 3 respectively.
Defensive end Kane Strohman has been the best in the SCAC so far, leading the conference in tackles per game (8.3) and total sacks (4.5). McMurry currently leads the SCAC in total offense with 355.3 total yards per game while also boasting the strongest defense in the SCAC allowing 12.3 points per game and only 263.3 yards per game.
McMurry will continue their hot start on the road against Centenary College in Shreveport, LA on October 12 before coming home to face cross-town rivals Hardin-Simmons University on October 19.
