Theatre Performs “The Magic Toyshop”

Issue 34: December 4, 2024

This Saturday at 10am, McMurry Theatre presents a fun and hilarious Christmas show called The Magic Toy Shop. The story follows the Master Toymaker and the dolls he has made that are sprinkled with magic doll dust, which allows them to walk, talk, and breathe. He decides that they are too special to sell, but a clumsy ragdoll named Sunny disagrees and wants to be given a home where she will be loved. With the help of a mysterious customer and the audience, the dolls achieve their ambition to be given wonderful homes for Christmas.

In this show, I play Sunny the Ragdoll and I am so excited! Rehearsing has been tons of fun because we all get to act super silly and over dramatic, since it is a children’s show. This experience has made my appreciation for Children’s Theatre grow immensely. It is so exhausting being big and loud, and trying to be funny for kids all at the same time. Performing a Children’s show is more draining than any play or musical I have been a part of, but anticipating the loud laughter from the kids is what keeps us going!

Next week, the cast will be touring many Elementary schools here in Abilene and we could not be more thrilled. Last December when we toured “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, we all had the most amazing experience. The kids’ reactions and comments make all of our hard work and exhaustion worth it. I am sure that they are going to absolutely love our fun costumes designed by freshman Mia Mckean, and our cute doll makeup designed by senior Aby Brown.

If you are looking for an enjoyable break from the stress of finals, I highly recommend that you come see it! This laugh-out-loud play is directed by McMurry theatre alumna Madi Melbourne and will only be performed for the public on Saturday morning. Tickets can be found here; you won’t want to miss this adorable show!
