We’re almost there – You got this!
During the month of December there is so much to be grateful for. Family, friends, the tedious semester finally coming to an end. But among that goodness, December also becomes very gloomy. The sun doesn’t shine as vibrantly, the clouds fall hazy and sad, and I know for students, myself included, that lack of vitamin D begins becomes a source of negative energy plaguing our lives. Thoughts of anxiety, depression, and inadequacy often creep into our minds as this season hits; if you struggle with these feelings, let’s take a moment to talk about how to be kind and loving toward ourselves during this time of stress!
First, take a deep breath and say, “You’re almost there!” You have emerged the semester, battling homework, drama, and exhaustion, triumphant! The light is at the end of the tunnel and you should be so proud of how far you have come on this journey. Questions still may not be answered, and the hardships you’ve had to endure may still be having impacts on your heart, but you are strong and resilient. You got this!
Second, tell yourself, “it’s okay to not be okay.” I am very guilty of getting upset when I am not healing or growing as fast as I think I need to be. I get very critical about my feelings, and sometimes because of that, I won’t let myself feel emotions to their full extent. But you do not need to feel ashamed for feeling sad, or feeling angry. You are allowed to think and to feel. Be empowered by your emotions, and let them reveal themselves to you before they become bottled up and angry!
Finally, take a moment to do something for yourself. Not for school, or your job, or your partner. For you! Sometimes the anxiety I face is solely because I don’t give myself time for myself! Allowing yourself time to relax, or read, bake, etc. can really center your sense of stability and connection. Be sure to give yourself time to be kind and nurturing to your own health!
I know your sadness isn’t going to magically disappear after reading this article, but I hope it does remind you that you are deserving of love, support, and grace! Keep moving forward! You are amazing!
