Ready For Adventure: A Study Abroad Trip to Italy

Issue 35: January 29, 2025

This February, the Art department is embarking on an exciting study abroad journey to—Italy! For many of us, this is more than just a trip; it’s an opportunity to see the world in a new light, to immerse ourselves in the beauty of Italian culture, and to experience the art that inspired us and the artists before us!

For me, this trip is a dream come true! This will be my first ever trip overseas and I am extremely excited, but also incredibly nervous! Having the right documents, the right size luggage, and packing all the right things but leaving room for all the souvenirs (there will be many), is hard to navigate! Thankfully, I’m not going alone. Yes, I have my professors and classmates to keep me company, but my greatest companion on this trip is my mom, Katelyn Scott.

Not only has she helped me get a suitcase (curtesy of my grandmother), travel watercolor sets, and packing lists, my mom shares in my excitement to spend time together and learn about art! It warms my heart so much to know I will have her with me to experience the world of creativity that has inspired me since I was a kid.

We will be taking the same classes together, 2D Studies and Photography, and I am excited to see how we each interpret Italy! Seeing my mom embrace her creativity already in her practice for the trip has been so fun. Her watercolor and photography are beautiful, and I can’t wait to see her hard work reflected in the pieces we will take home with us.

Most of all I’m excited to share my passions with my mom. To exchange our works, talk about art that resonates with us, and experience the exhilarating atmosphere of a new country with the person who taught me how to love art. And, I mean, two bags to fit souvenirs doesn’t sound too bad. I’m just kidding! We’re a month away from our journey and I can’t wait to adventure with you, Mom. I love you!
