A Look at the Discovery Trip to TCU

Issue 39: April 3, 2025

I recently embarked on an exhilarating discovery trip hosted by Dr. Annette Wren and Deborah
Castleman to Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth, and it was truly an unforgettable
experience. This journey revealed a vibrant new layer of Fort Worth that I had never explored
before, brimming with culture and excitement. During my visit, I indulged in a variety of
delicious meals at local eateries, each offering a unique blend of flavors and inviting ambiance
that showcased the culinary diversity of the area. One standout was Central Market, where I was
captivated by their impressive sushi display, which was both fresh and flavorful.

Another highlight was dining at HG Sply Co., where the rich flavors of their dishes make you
want to come back again. I savored their innovative takes on classic recipes, with fresh, locally
sourced ingredients that elevated each bite to a new level of deliciousness. Of course, no culinary
adventure would be complete without dessert, and we ended one of our evenings at Melt Ice
Cream, a charming spot known for its creative flavors. If you are not allergic or lactose
intolerant, I highly recommend trying the Texas Lavender Honey Crunch—it’s a delightful
combination of floral notes and sweet honey that perfectly encapsulates the essence of Texas.
Also on the trip, we attended a captivating performance by the Parker String Quartet in the
stunning Van Cliburn Concert Hall on the TCU campus. The Quartet had played different works,
that left chills.

Although I have visited Fort Worth countless times, I have only seen the lively attractions of the
Stockyards area. Yes, I know, how many times can you watch the Cowboys with their gun
shows, Mackenzie? The answer is five times. This trip revealed to me the rich experiences that
existed beyond that familiar side of the city, opening my eyes to the hidden gems I had
overlooked or passed by. I believe that discovery trips like this are invaluable for anyone
considering graduate school or trying to gauge the vibe of a city they’ve never experienced. They
offer a perfect opportunity to immerse oneself in the culture and energy of a place, helping you
make informed decisions about your future. Check them out and enjoy yourself
