Release your Stress with “Break a Plate”

Issue 41: April 30, 2025

It’s that time of year again—finals are looming, and the pressure feels as heavy as the storm clouds that have hovered over us all week. But just when things seem bleak, a little burst of relief appears! Gamma Sigma proudly presents, for the second year in a row, “Break a Plate”—an event guaranteed to lift your spirits and ease your stress!

Breaking plates is a tradition rooted in Greek history. Satisfying both spiritual and superstitious beliefs, this tradition is often associated with joy and celebration. Smashing a glass plate symbolizes the release of negative energy and lingering worries—clearing the way for new beginnings, whether it’s marriage or, for many of our students, graduation.

Gamma Sigma will be providing glass plates for $2 a piece, or $5 for three plates, and sharpie markers to write down any grievances or frustrations you’ve endured throughout the year. Then, on a protective tarp, you will be encouraged to smash your plate on the ground with all your might! This stress-relieving exercise was very well received last year, and we hope to have a similar, if not bigger turnout!

Just like you students, Gamma Sigma has endured a very stressful year. From their president deciding to step down from her role in club to focus on school and personal life, to their eventful pledging season, the girls of Gamma Sigma have been through a lot. This fundraiser represents not only the tradition associated with Greek Life, but also the resilience and fresh start the club is excited to witness next semester.

Join Gamma Sigma this Thursday May 1st, and Friday May 2nd from 11:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m. in the Quad, for an enjoyable and stress relieving experience. You are valued, you are talented, and you are almost done!
