Beat the Summer Heat at Jackson Square

Issue 42: October 1, 2025

Right off the banks of the Mississippi River lies a charming place where the soulful notes of jazz linger in the air, New Orleans, a city rich with hidden charms and wondrous delights. Among its many treasures, you can discover a serene haven amidst the vibrant hustle and bustle of city life: Jackson Square. In the bourbon-hazed streets of New Orleans, Jackson Square delivers an unparalleled experience—an ideal spot to unwind, whether you are diving into a good book or soaking in the city’s vibrant sights.

As summer descends upon the city, particularly in the early weeks of June, Jackson Square feels like a hidden gem—rarely overcrowded, offering visitors a peaceful retreat. You will not be pushed around or be in large, overwhelming crowds. The warm, sticky air carries the aroma of the Mississippi River intertwined with the smell of fresh beignets from Café du Monde. The lively sounds of trumpet players fill the atmosphere, with different songs playing in the style of Louis Armstrong to original compositions bursting with local flair. A grand statue of President Jackson commands attention at the heart of the square, serving as a reminder of his presence at the Battle of New Orleans. Make sure to take pictures! There are many sights and your camera roll will be filled by the time you leave. Take a picture next to the Jackson Square Fountain that sits close to the St. Louis Cathedral and has been there since 1961, with its French Renaissance design. Now look around you, the towering, old oak trees mixed with palm trees sway gently in the summer breeze, their leaves whispering secrets from decades past as tourists stroll beneath their boughs. Breathe it in, do you smell it? The scent of oak and the occasional scent of coffee, you are here in Jackson Square.

As noon approaches, the Square transforms into an open art gallery. Local artists flock to the fences of Jackson Square, proudly displaying their diverse works for visitors to admire and purchase. From abstract art to intricately crafted jewelry, the artistry reflects the spirit and creativity of New Orleans.  A leisurely midday stroll through Jackson Square presents a feast for the senses with color, creativity, and camaraderie in the air. Come and sit down at one of the benches inside the Square, and you might hear an artist barter, “Twenty doll-ahs, no! I meant forty.” Nothing is ever free around the Square, so be careful and don’t stand still for too long; you’ve got places to be!

At the rear of the square stands the magnificent St. Louis Cathedral, a true architectural marvel that serves as a magnet for tourists and locals alike. Upon reaching Jackson Square and casting your gaze toward the west, you can’t help but be captivated by the cathedral’s stunning façade, beckoning you to come inside. The white stone building rises majestically, flanked by two elegantly designed spires that reach for the sky, each gracefully supporting the prominent tallest spire, crowned with a gleaming cross. At first glance, one might not suspect the building’s tumultuous history, having undergone numerous renovations due to the ravaging effects of fire. This cathedral is still hauntingly beautiful. Upon crossing the threshold, you are enveloped in a profound sense of serenity—an experience that transcends religious beliefs. The altar gleams with a golden aura, yet the candles are not lit during this time of day. Many find tranquility and reflection within these hallowed walls, where intricate carvings of saints and biblical scenes capture the imagination. The checkered floor and wooden pews invite you to sit still for a while. Breathe in the smell of frankincense and myrrh, which lingers in the air from Morning Mass. Don’t forget to return to the vibrant life outside, where Jackson Square continues to pulse with energy.

Now you must be getting hungry, right? Diagonally across from the square, Café du Monde stands as a beloved building, tempting tourists with the enticing combination of chicory coffee and the famously indulgent beignets that are a must-try for anyone in the area. The building is a white stone building with a striped green and white awning over the patio. The servers all wear white uniforms, black bow ties, and paper hats with “Café du Monde” printed in a green font. They bustle around you, carrying trays of drinks and beignets, “Excuse me! Order Up!” you will hear throughout the Café. This place is always busy, so when there is a free table, make sure to snatch it up before anyone else does, or you will be eating beignets while standing up. There are different beverages at Café du Monde, from lattes to a simple glass of milk. You will never smell a beignet burning, just the sweet smell of powdered sugar blowing off the beignets when servers pass by. Make sure to sit by the window, so you can look out onto the streets and find Jackson Square still waiting for you.

On summer afternoons, when sudden downpour sweeps across the city, you’ll find refuge beneath sturdy branches of the old oak trees or shelter under storefronts that line the Square. The rain dances on the streets, creating steam to rise and blanket the city in a fog while the water swells onto the sidewalks. Hopefully you won’t be wearing sandals when you visit!

So why not hop in your car and embark on a drive along Interstate 10? Allow the journey to lead you to Jackson Square; some may describe this experience as heavenly, while others disagree. This historic square, built in the early eighteenth century by French colonizers, has withstood the test of time, evolving into one of the most iconic sites to experience everything that defines New Orleans. To truly understand what makes this place special, you should experience it for yourself. Get behind the wheel and set off down the interstate—you may discover a new favorite spot in a city that welcomes you with open arms. Who knows? You might find yourself drawn to stay just a little longer.
