Native American Heritage Celebrations in Abilene
Hello, fellow War Hawks! Did you know that November is Indigenous People’s Month? Well, now you do! Throughout our small town of Abilene and even within the grounds of McMurry, there are different events which promote the Native American heritage! This is a great time to do something fun and learn more about the first people who settled here first, before European colonizers came to the Americas.
The first celebration will be at McMurry, hosted by the wonderful collaboration of TRIO and our dedicated library staff! The event is titled, Taco-Bout History: Native American Edition. I absolutely love the title for this event, it is quirky but fits so well for what will be happening! Set in the charming Backyard Trellis, nestled behind the Dining Hall, this evening promises to be filled with engaging activities and delightful experiences. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on November 13, immerse yourself in the art of jewelry-making and explore fascinating historical tidbits that will be shared throughout the event. To tantalize your taste buds, they will be serving delicious Navajo-style tacos—a true culinary treat you won’t want to miss! It is free of charge! Come by for a wonderful evening of creativity, conversation, and community.
The next celebration is being hosted at the Grace Museum in Downtown Abilene. This is a perfect time to go to the Grace, if you have never been or wish to go back! On November 16from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., this event is called: Native American Heritage Celebration. It is free entry to the Grace during this time. What will be happening during this event is a Paint Rock-inspired activity, and the Cultural Heritage will be on display. Another important thing is a collage workshop with Angela Vela from the Indigenous Cultures Institute, which will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This event will primarily look at the Comanche tribe, also it is highly encouraged to bring pictures of your ancestors if you have a picture of your Indigenous ancestors!
So, make sure to stop on by for these amazing events and make sure to take pictures. As always, have fun and stay safe, War Hawks!
