Gamma Sigma Hosts Tacky Prom this Friday Night
Do you want to re-live your prom experience or just love dressing up? This Friday, 7-9:30 pm, the sorority Gamma Sigma is hosting our first annual Tacky Prom! This is a fun event that is open to all of campus, not just those a part of Greek Life. Everyone is invited to dress as tacky as possible, whether that’s 80s puffy sleeves, 2000s animal print, or 2016 sequins. The dress code is not required, but it is highly encouraged!
When planning the event, we decided that March would be the perfect time because it falls into the traditional Prom season. It ended up working out perfectly because Tacky Prom closes out Greek Week at McMurry. The week includes a Silent Disco, a service project, Grocery Bingo, and it ends with our event!
As the President of Gamma Sigma, I was tasked with creating a big event for us to host this year, and for students to enjoy. I knew it needed to be a fundraiser for us, but I also wanted to tie in some philanthropy and give back. After some research and discussion with the other girls, we decided that Tacky Prom would be something different and fun for us to do! When brainstorming over the summer about where some of the proceeds would go, one of our members, Lauren Scott, had the idea of thrift stores. We all agreed on this plan because where would someone buy a tacky prom dress…a thrift store! Lauren stated, “The initial idea came from my love of thrifting. Organizations like Goodwill and the Salvation Army are constantly working to provide clothing, food, and services to those in need, a mission that I found very compelling and important. We have been encouraging people to go to thrift stores to locate their prom attire, so we figured what better place to give back than one that even we are benefiting from.” The Salvation Army is where we have decided a portion of the profits will be donated because they are a faith-based organization with a commitment to meeting human needs without discrimination.
A typical prom plays music that many people don’t want to hear, so we wanted to change that. We understand how important music is for any dance, so there will be an opportunity to submit requests! We will have a QR code for people to scan and enter any songs they want to hear. We will be actively looking through the requests all night, so you’ll hear what you want!
The big anticipation award of the night is Tacky Prom King and Queen! Everyone who is at the event will automatically be in the running. Near the end of the night, the girls in Gamma Sigma will discuss and name who we think is dressed the tackiest, so go all out! We will also be giving awards to the tackiest Fraternity and Sorority. Votes for this award will be sold for 25 cents a piece at our table for selling tickets and up until the award is announced that night.
If you are interested in attending tomorrow, we will be selling tickets from 10-11:45 am in the Campus Center atrium, as well as at the door of the event. Tickets bought in advance are $8 for one and $12 for two. Tickets bought at the door will increase to $10 for one and $15 for two. Tacky Prom will be held in the Auxiliary Gym (across from the pool) from 7-9:30 pm. Doors will open at 6:45 pm. We hope to see you there, dressed in shimmer and glam!
