My Spotify Wrapped
If you are a Spotify user, you are likely already aware that Spotify Wrapped 2024 was just released. For those who do not know, Spotify Wrapped gives listeners the opportunity to look back at artists and songs that they listened to throughout the year. It also is a way to see what music defined the year!
I was curious how Spotify personalizes my music and suggests artists to me, so I did some research on how it works. Molly Holder, Spotify’s Senior Director of Personalization, revealed more about the magic behind Wrapped in a recent article. She explained that “As you add songs to a playlist, listen to an entire song, skip a song, or engage with an artist, it sends us clear signals that help us tailor our programming to your taste.” She also explains that recommendations are powered by data, and when a new song or album is released, there is no data. So instead, they look at signs of growing popularity. If a song is climbing the charts, it becomes a valuable signal for Spotify’s recommendation algorithms.
Some of the Global Spotify Wrapped 2024 data revealed that pop stars Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter rocketed to the top of the charts this year. This does not come as a surprise at all because of Chappell’s popular “HOT TO GO” & “Good Luck, Babe!” and Sabrina’s summer hit “Espresso”, which many called the song of the summer. Another important statistic is how Country music has crossed into other genres because of artists such as Beyonce, Lana Del Rey, and Post Malone. These country-ish songs gained a lot of popularity, but also caused a lot of debate on whether it is “true country music”.
Every year I look forward to my Spotify wrapped because I love seeing what music I listened to in the past 12 months. Just like the past 2 years, Taylor Swift is my #1 artist, and I am in the top 1% of listeners, which I am very proud to say. Pop artists Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Ariana Grande were also in my top artists like many others. Sabrina took over my top songs with 3 out of the top 5 being sung by her. My most listened to song of the year was the summer sensation “Espresso”, and I was in the top 0.01% of listeners globally.
I will be spending the next weeks listening to my curated top songs of 2024 and reminiscing on songs I haven’t heard in a bit! I highly recommend using Spotify for your music so that you can experience the joy of Spotify Wrapped every December!
