A Life Built on Bonds: An Interview with Maricruz Lopez

Issue 47: February 12, 2026

Here at McMurry, relationships are the foundation of campus life. The connections formed between students and staff— and especially among students themselves—often grow into meaningful bonds that shape the community on campus. One person who reflects that interconnected spirit with pride is Maricruz Lopez.

Lopez has been part of the McMurry family for more than twenty years. Today, she greets students as the cashier at the Grab-and-Go on the first floor of Old Main while also serving behind the scenes as a catering coordinator. Through her years of hard work, she has become a familiar and welcoming presence for countless students passing through campus. Her famous breakfast burritos have become a signature for sleepy students seeking a morning revival, and her friendly attitude has touched the hearts of many, making her an admirable representative of the importance of genuine connection.

Her favorite part of the job is the chance to interact with students. When asked what she enjoys most, she smiled and said, “Talking to students. I like their energy and building relationships with them.” Her eagerness to connect with the student body has opened the door to even more relationship-building opportunities, including events like Homecoming and Deck the Quad. These gatherings have allowed her not only to spend time with the students she sees every day, but also to share an important part of her life by introducing her family to the community she cares so deeply about.

Lopez has become an important presence in my own life as well. I had the pleasure of meeting her daughter and grandchildren at a tailgate last semester, and it was a joy to glimpse a more personal side of such a wonderful woman. I find myself stopping by the Grab-and-Go even when I’m not hungry, simply for the chance to say hello. Lopez has inspired me to be more intentional about connecting with others and valuing everyday interactions.

She says her guiding motivation is simple: to help people and build authentic relationships that last. On behalf of myself, and so many students across campus, I want to thank Lopez for her effortless kindness and constant willingness to engage. Her warmth and dedication have left a lasting mark on my McMurry experience, and she deserves to be recognized. If you have the chance, stop by the Grab-and-Go and share your appreciation with her.
