This mystery streak is none other than McMurry’s very own Spider-Man, a student whose goal is to bring laughter, positivity, and a little bit of whimsy to the War Hawk community.

When asked what inspired him to don the mask, Spider-Man said the idea began with a joke. “It just seemed funny. Spider-Man makes the least sense here because there’s no tall buildings in Abilene, but that made it even better. Plus, everybody loves Spider-Man.” Beneath the mask is a serious desire to lighten the load of everyday life, he continues, “there’s so much negativity in the world right now. I just want to give people a reason to laugh, even for a second. Even if they’re laughing at me, it helps.”

So far, one of his most memorable appearances came at the Health and Wellness Fair, where he drew smiles, high fives, and even a sudden spike in Instagram followers. “Everyone was just so chill about it,” he said. “It was a lot of fun minus the heat stroke.” Heat, as it would happen, is one of his greatest weaknesses. “This costume gets really hot in Texas,” he elaborates. “One time I was out picking up trash in full gear, and I had to duck inside a building just to breathe. I’m definitely saving more appearances for cooler weather.”

And while some friends of Spider-Man know who’s behind the mask, most of the campus remains unaware. “I’m a freshman and there’s like 1,200 kids here. The ones who know are close friends who helped me buy the costume. For most people, it’s still a mystery.” Students often ask what motivated him, giving him a chance to share his message about spreading joy. Faculty and staff have also leaned into the fun. He recalled attending chapel in costume, where an administrator let him go first in the communion line, stating to Spiderman, “Heroes first.”

Spider-Man has his sights set on bigger things. In the short term, he hopes to grow his Instagram following to 100 followers. Long term, he dreams of launching a YouTube channel in the style of creators who mix comedy with positivity. “I want to make funny content but also do helpful stuff for the community. That’s the balance.” He is also inspired by “Hopecore” which is a recent social media movement built on kindness, authenticity, and positive action. “That’s exactly what I’m trying to do. Spread love, man. One love. Love each other.”

Before pulling the mask back on, Spider-Man had one last message for War Hawks: “Anytime you see me on campus, take a picture and tag me @mcmurry_spider_manz. Besides that, just love each other and don’t be idiots. And if you see trash, pick it up.” Because it seems even superheroes can’t do it alone.

Students commuting across campus may have briefly spotted a red and blue blur dashing between classes, collecting trash, or making an appearance at campus events.
