{"id":551,"date":"2020-02-12T14:09:12","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T20:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.mcm.edu\/herald\/?p=551"},"modified":"2020-02-12T14:09:12","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T20:09:12","slug":"basketball-comes-to-a-close","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.mcm.edu\/herald\/2020\/02\/12\/basketball-comes-to-a-close\/","title":{"rendered":"Basketball Comes to a Close"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This\nbasketball season flew open and shut in a flash as the War Hawks played their\nfinal home game Saturday, February 8<sup>th<\/sup> against Louisiana College.\nSaturday\u2019s game also marked senior night for seven of McMurry\u2019s men and women. Graduating\nfrom the women\u2019s team are forwards Skyler Reyna and Sarah Doherty. Skylar and\nSarah both graduate with numerous ASC honors. From the men\u2019s team, forwards graduating\nare Krishawn Terry, Mike Williams Jr, and Sherack Malokwu; graduating guards\nare Zacc Carter and Dedrick Berry Jr. Both games ended in disheartening losses\nagainst the Wildcats. The War Hawks have four more games in the season, all\naway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The women\u2019s team started Saturday\u2019s\ngame trailing the Louisiana College Wildcats. The War Hawks were behind 23-38.\nMcMurry came back after the half ready to fight and cut the lead to 53-47 at\nthe end of the third quarter, with the Wildcats still ahead. Barely ahead with\na 3-point lead, Louisiana College held the War Hawks defensively, keeping the\nupper hand for a tight victory. Seniors Reyna and Doherty scored a combined 44\npoints. Freshman Destiny Matthews played a game to remember, scoring 19 points\nto close out her last home game of her freshman season. Junior Francheska\nAquino made her mark on the game sinking a game-tying shot from the left side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The men started the first half of\nthe game strong, maintaining a lead over the Wild Cats. However, Louisiana\nCollege &nbsp;soon took the lead, leaving the\nWar Hawks closely behind. McMurry shot just 26% in the second half compared to\nthe 65% in the first half of the game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The two losses on senior night\nheavily parallel the losses both teams took Thursday, February 6 against\nBelhaven University. The War Hawk women received a 91-63 loss, while the men\nwent into overtime eventually falling to the Blazers 94-89. For the women, this\nwas the seventh straight loss. McMurry took the early lead but quickly fell to\nBelhaven\u2019s offense. Skyler Reyna and Destiny Matthews lead the game in points\nfor the War Hawks with 15 and 12 respectively. In the men\u2019s game, the War Hawks\nheld to a lead for a significant portion of the game. In the second half of the\ngame, the War Hawks and the Blazers battled back and forth leading into\nMcMurry\u2019s first overtime of the season. Unfortunately, the War Hawks couldn\u2019t\nmatch Belhaven\u2019s overtime offensive push. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Before facing off against Belhaven\nUniversity, the War Hawks fell to Concordia University. With three\ndisheartening losses looming over both the men and women, the War Hawks have a\nlot of morale to build before their next game. Both teams will be on the road in\nAlpine, Texas, February 13, to face off against the Sul Ross State University\nLobos.
