During April, MUN\ntraveled to New York City for the annual NMUN conference. The team participated\nin five different committees representing Belize. All representatives from\nMcMurry worked with other college students from all over the world, and each\ncommittee held its own mandate and worked on a diverse body of topics and\nissues. Model UN was founded to create opportunities for future world leaders to\naddress world problems and build solutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representing\nCOP, the Conference of Parties, Alec Hanshaw and Odai Warrayat worked on the\ntopic of capacity-building for combating climate change in developing countries.\nThe duo sponsored four papers that were passed as resolutions and were\nsignatories on many more. \u201cThe biggest take away was learning how to cooperate\nwith students from all over the world, and to reach a common goal,\u201d said junior\nAlec Hanshaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abby\nRodriguez and Cameron Foster represented the United Nations Environment\nAssembly, UNEA. The two worked on the topic of addressing plastic litter and\nmicroplastics. The duo worked heavily on two papers, both of which were passed.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Juliana\nFabrizio and Sherack Malokwu assumed the role of Belize in the General Assembly\n1, discussing nuclear disarmament and international security. The pair worked\nwith other small developing nations to create a united resolution on the topic\nthat was passed by the entire committee. \u201cModel UN is always a great learning\nexperience. I\u2019m a political science major, so it\u2019s neat to see what kind of\ncareers I could go into with my degree,\u201d said junior Juliana Fabrizio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>General\nAssembly 2 was represented by Peace Phan. The committee worked on external debt\nsustainability and development. Peace Phan worked on two resolutions that were\npassed. Peace also took home a position paper award. The award is given to\ndelegates who write an outstanding paper on the position their country would\ntake on the topic and is submitted before the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josephine\nWoytas represented the General Assembly 3 committee, passing two resolutions discussing\ncombating human trafficking. Josephine also took home a position paper award.\nAlong with Latin-American and Caribbean nations, Josephine worked toward\ncreative solutions in prevention, prosecution, and protection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nconference concluded by the group traveling to the General Assembly hall of the\nUnited Nations Secretariat for closing ceremonies. NMUN organizers and members\nof the United Nations spoke to students and professors about their careers in\nthe UN and the options that students could possibly pursue in the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ntrip was not all business, however, the team had the opportunity to explore the\ncity and all it had to offer. The group made stops in Little Italy, the Museum\nof Modern Art, the Empire State Building, and many other world famous sites in\nthe \u201cBig Apple.\u201d Unique food and experiences were all within grasp of the team\nin NYC and they took advantage of it.
