Kimber Boyles is a member of the Brant Scouts and is working with Dr. Joel Brant to survey the reptiles and amphibians (collectively termed herptiles or herps) at Firebase Libby. This summer Kimber was the recipient of the Beasley Student Research Award which is providing her a stipend to support her research activities. The Brant Scouts have established four drift fence arrays with pitfall buckets and funnel traps to capture herps. Each week Kimber opens the drift fence arrays and runs them for three days (Tuesday to Thursday). Kimber also spends time on site opportunistically searching for herps and hand catching them. On Tuesday evenings this means catching frogs at the only pond on the property. Thus far she has recorded 17 species of herptile including eight amphibians, three lizards, one turtle, and six snakes.
