This past weekend Dr. Brant took 2 students (& 1 recent graduate) to the 37th annual meeting of the Texas Society of Mammalogists (TSM). On Saturday, Team Brant Scouts researcher Krystal Goedde gave an oral presentation entitled “Mammal Species Abundance Analysis Using Camera Traps at Camp Bowie Training Facility, Brown County, Texas” discussing some of the research conducted by the Brant Scouts. Saturday night Krystal was recognized with the Rollin H. Baker Award for the best oral presentation in classical mammalogy at the organismal level by an undergraduate student. The award comes with a certificate (suitable for framing) and a check (suitable for spending). As her research & academic advisor, Dr. Brant states he’s “extremely proud of Krystal, both for her performance and for having the courage to present her research in front of the leading experts on Texas mammals”.
The Texas Society of Mammalogists (TSM) is a regional scientific meeting with representatives from universities in Louisiana, Oklahoma, & Texas. TSM is a student-focused scientific meeting which seeks to bring together graduate and undergraduate students with research programs throughout the state. This year there were 19 oral presentations and 27 poster presentations.
So there you have it – right out of the gate one of our Research Team Students manages to take home the big prize doing great work that eclipsed the presentations of other college students from three states and lots of top universities. Way to set a high bar for the rest of us, Krystal and Dr. B! Hardly seems fair that you hit a homer before we’re even warmed up!
