Garrison Shin Set to Lead MSG: Focusing on Engagement, Communication, and Continuity

Issue 39: April 3, 2025

Garrison Shin, this year’s MSG Attorney General, will serve as Student Government President
for the 2025–2026 academic year after running unopposed. With two years of executive
experience under his belt, Shin is looking ahead with a focus on communication, student
engagement, and continuity in leadership.

One of Shin’s biggest changes as Attorney General came early in his tenure: shifting elections
from Google Forms to Microsoft Forms.

“Everyone has a Google account, you can have multiple,” he said. “But with Microsoft Forms,
you can force only McMurry students to vote.”

He also explored and implemented ways to increase transparency, including things like
lockdown codes, clearer procedures, and a dedicated election platform. His hope? A long-term
foundation for more secure, trustworthy MSG elections.

Shin recognizes that student involvement has been inconsistent since the pandemic.
“Last year we had tons of petitions… but the year before that, only one election,” he said.
“People don’t go out as much, they don’t do as much stuff. It’s different now.”

Rather than trying to force participation, he believes in more natural outreach.

“You just let people know, talk to your friends, your orgs. That’s how people get involved.”

As president, Shin plans to focus on encouraging participation and improving internal
communication. He’s floated the idea of organizing MSG subcommittees by class year for
example, giving freshmen a focus area like food or campus services.

“Cohorts already work together in things like town halls, it might make sense to expand that.”

He’s also looking to make transitions between executives smoother.

“It takes two years to figure out how to do the job right,” he said. “If I can put it in a binder or on
a USB (for AG), I want to do that.”

2025 MSG Executive Elections Recap
While Shin’s presidency is confirmed, two executive positions, Vice President and Attorney
General, did not receive any initial petitions this year. Petitions were reopened until Thursday,
April 3 at 11 a.m.

“It’s a job,” Shin said. “It’s not just Monday nights, you’re also a representative to the Board of
Trustees.”

Here’s a quick overview of the executive roles:

Vice President
● Assists the President
● Often takes on responsibilities like event marketing and logistics
● Attends executive meetings and campus-wide events
● Serves as a student representative to the Board of Trustees

Attorney General
● Runs MSG elections
● Interprets the MSG Constitution and ensures it’s followed
● Works with university officials on student safety and policy issues
● Also represents MSG to the Board of Trustees

Treasurer
● The only executive position with a race this year
● Manages MSG’s budget
● Works with student organizations to allocate funds
● Chairs the appropriations committee

MSG is still looking for petitioners for both Vice President and Attorney General, and don’t forget
to vote April 7th – April 11th at 5 PM.
