Makona Hosts Flamingo 5K 2025

Issue 43: October 15, 2025

Lace up your running shoes because the men of Makona Fraternity are back for the annual 2025 Flamingo 5K! Running to raise awareness and funds for families affected directly by breast cancer. On Saturday, November 1st, 2025, join Makona and friends at Wilford Moore Stadium right here at McMurry!

Breast cancer affects thousands of families every year. 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. All profits from the Flamingo 5K go directly to patients and families affected by the disease to help them offset the cost of treatment and other related costs. Makona achieves this through a partnership with Cancer Services Network right here in Abilene. Last year, Makona raised over $2000 to donate, and the goal this year is to raise $2500.

Whether you’re a dedicated runner, a casual walker, personally affected by breast cancer, family of someone affected or someone who just loves to support a good cause, this event is for you. Registration is $25 for the full 5K, and that includes a 2025 Flamingo 5K T-shirt, water, and other amenities provided at the race. If a full 5K sounds a bit too much, no big deal, for the second year, Makona is also running the Makona Mile, a more accessible mile route for $20, which includes the same benefits. Further, there is an even more accessible no shirt option for $10. But wait, there’s more: Use code “MKA25” at registration checkout for students, active military, clergy, public servants, people with disabilities, and veterans to receive $5 off of their registration! Lastly, survivors and those in treatment can use code “Survivor” for one free shirt and registration to either race.

Check-in starts at 9:30 a.m., with races beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Wilford Moore Stadium. The course takes you through two scenic laps around campus and finishes back at the stadium.

“Our fraternity continues to host the Flamingo 5K each year to stay active in the community and support those affected by breast cancer,” Makona Fraternity President and event organizer Leo Hernandez-Garza said. “There are many families who are impacted by breast cancer, and as Makona Men’s Fraternity at McMurry University, we’re committed to making a difference any way we can. Our annual Flamingo 5K is one of the ways we come together to inspire others to support those in need. Every donation matters and helps create a lasting impact on the lives of those affected.”

No one should have to fight breast cancer alone, and it seems Makona isn’t alone either. On October 14th, a familiar campus crusader was spotted in the dining hall during dinner thwarting the Joker disturbing the peace civilians dining once again. The dark knight, accompanied by a team of Makona Fraternity fall pledges, gave chase outside onto the backyard where the Joker was apprehended. Batman and friends were also giving out registration slips to inform the student body of how they can also be heroes by registering for the 2025 Flamingo 5K.
