Kale and pepper plants
Kale and pepper plants grown as a project for the Introduction to Nutrition course.

Ms. Brooke Wright, lead instructor for the new Human Health Science major at McMurry, has embarked on a greenhouse project for HHSC 1310, our Intro to Nutrition course.

Professor Wright wanted to show students that it is not that difficult to grow their own produce at home.   She said, “We have a chapter that discusses sustainability of the environment in terms of providing food for a growing population, and I believe this project would help add to the information presented.  Also, this project could help students gain the experience and confidence to grow some of their own produce, as only two students in the class have gardened in the past.”   Ms. Wright worked with Lab Manager Jeff Moore to purchase pots, plants, garden soil, and gardening tools for the project.  Students selected plants–kale, peppers, tomatoes, green beans, basil–and repotted them.  The Big Country Master Gardeners visited the class to give a short talk on home gardening to the students and answer questions.

The class of twelve students will each take home a plant at the conclusion of the spring semester.
