The summer research students working on team Crab Boyle are investigating what terrestrial animals and birds recognize the invasive crab as a food source. So far, the birds seem uninterested, but the raccoons are not only coming to snack each night, but also bringing friends! The photo at left was captured with a web cam set up with a motion sensor. You can see the raccoon taking advantage of a meal served in a plastic storage bin containing water and crabs.
Based on preliminary data, raccoons see invasive crabs as a delicacy!
