CAB Keeping Students Engaged and Happy

On McMurry’s campus, several organizations plan events for students to make their student life more entertaining and less stressful. However, only one group is dedicated to keeping student life fun and active. CAB or Campus Activities Board, is in a charge of a variety of the activities and events hosted on campus. From free concerts and movie nights, to trips to Six Flags, CAB is busy keeping students busy.

The War Hawk Herald sat down with Gaby Martell, CAB’s president, to discuss what it takes to run the fun. Gaby Martell served as vice-president of Campus Activities Board last year. She ran for president because: “I [Gaby] see the potential to reach and do amazing things on Campus and I wanted to make sure that those things are accomplished.”

The position requires a lot of time and effort. Not only is CAB’s president in charge of creating fun events for students, but also organizing events and making sure they are ran effectively. “The hardest part of this position is the time management,” said Martell. “It requires so much time to plan and work on events.”  Martell, a junior majoring in physics, manages her time well between heavy class work and homework, and the huge responsibility that is CAB.

“The most important thing that all students should know about CAB is that all the events are fun and free,” Martell added. “If students are open to participating, the events are way more fun.” Fall is the busier season for CAB. With a hoard of freshmen barely getting acquainted with McMurry, CAB makes it their mission to help students on campus by engaging them in fun activities. “When students first arrive at McMurry, many get homesick, so we try to have at least one event a week during the fall semester to keep students engaged and involved.”

CAB’s biggest event is the fall festival. Occurring every October, the festival is a large event with food, games, and entertainment to mark the first days of fall. Gaby Martell will be running for president again next year and hopes to plan more skate nights, concerts, and festivals for students. If CAB can leave students with one reminder it is: “we work on events and pay for events so our students can have fun for free and get involved in campus more.”

If you or someone you know is interested in joining Campus Activities Board contact Gaby Martell, or, pop into a meeting in the VMMR room in the dining hall on Tuesdays at noon.
