Grow Through What You Go Through

Growth happens over time, when you think of the term “Growth” the majority of people think of beautiful plants, trees, roses, and sunflowers. The beautiful things of this world grow from just a small seed that isn’t much of anything, that then gets transformed into big beautiful masterpieces.

Growth happens within ourselves as well, I can guarantee that every person isn’t the same as they were a few months ago. We are not meant to stay the same, change is good. We cannot become what we want to be by simply remaining the same we have to learn to trust the journey even if we do not understand it.Sometimes what we never wanted or expected turns out to be what we were desperately in need of.

On October 1, 2020 a self-care event took place in the Martin Lobby that was hosted by RA Rachael & Fatima. This event was posted on various doors and bulletin boards to help bring in students to the stress relief evening event. At the “Grow Through What You Go Through” event people gathered to express their creativity by painting flower pots, planting some new seeds to take care of and nourish, and have a calm evening at the end of the week.

Several students took this as an opportunity to spend time with friends to get away from some school work and out of the dorm rooms for a few hours. This event was a good one! I thought that this idea was out of the box and definitely different, which made me want to attend even more.

One anonymous student said, “I needed time away, this was the perfect opportunity I got to spend time with my friends. I’ve been through a lot and I look at my past situations as an opportunity to grow and learn. This event made me remember that.”

Growth is the process of taking the hurt and disappointment that we have encountered and looking at them as an opportunity to improve, learn, and have a change of heart instead of letting it turn us into a bitter and hateful person. Do not let life pass you by, learn from it.

Another student said “I was excited for the plants, I had been wanting to get some for a while. My friends also made me excited to come.”

Alfonso Sontoya said, “While at this event I realized that this semester to take care of myself I need to prioritize my physical and mental health. I am here for a reason, I have to let myself relax and realize when I just need to step away and spend time with friends.”

When you’re planting flowers, it seems like the simplest thing ever but… there was a deeper meaning that was really heart warming for many of the McMurry War Hawks. Growth is uncomfortable, messy, and full of emotions that are totally unexpected. It is totally necessary to progress and not become stagnant in life. Learning to trust in your journey, even when you don’t understand it. Everything will workout as it is supposed to, regardless of your plans.

If you are ever struggling remember that you have survived everything you have gone through up to this point in life. The best day of your life is still yet to come and there are still people you haven’t met, and things you haven’t experienced. Be patient with yourself, good things always take the most time. Explore all the different paths in life, until you are on the one that is most comfortable for you.

YOU CAN DO THIS, PLANT NEW SEEDS.
