Makona Fraternity Hosts 2024 Flamingo 5K for Breast Cancer Awareness

Issue 31: October 16, 2024

Get ready, McMurry! The men of Makona Fraternity are back, and they’re bringing the community together for the 2024 Flamingo 5K, a race that’s not just about running, it’s about raising awareness and funds for families affected by breast cancer. On Saturday, October 19, 2024, lace up your sneakers and join the crowd at Wilford Moore Stadium for a day that’s all about giving back and showing support.

Breast cancer affects thousands of families every year. In 2023 alone, nearly 297,790 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed, with 43,170 people losing their lives to the disease. Makona Fraternity isn’t standing by—they’ve organized the Flamingo 5K to help make a difference. Last year, they raised over $1500, and this year, they’re partnering with the Cancer Services Network to directly support families here in the Abilene community.

Whether you’re a dedicated runner, a casual walker, personally affected by breast cancer, or someone who just loves a good cause, this event is for you. Registration is $30 for the full 5K, and that includes a 2024 Flamingo 5K T-shirt, a McMurry Spirit bag, and a plastic water bottle. If a full 5K sounds a bit too much, no worries—this year, Makona is introducing the Makona Mile, a more accessible mile route for $20, which includes the same gear. But wait, there’s more: McMurry students who use code “MKA” at registration checkout receive 50% off of their registration.

Check-in starts at 8:45 AM, and both races kick off at 9:00 AM, right at Wilford Moore Stadium. The course takes you around campus and finishes back at the stadium, making it a scenic, community-centered event for every age that can walk!

Breast cancer is something no one should fight against alone, so Makona isn’t doing this alone either—they’ve teamed up with local businesses and student organizations to make the event even bigger! The 5K’s sponsors include: Jack’s Fan Club at the gold level, McMurry Student Government at the silver level, and both Terracon Consultants and McMurry’s Criminology and Sociology Club at the bronze level! These sponsors’ combined generosity means that for the first time in recent memory the Flamingo 5K will be a fully-funded event! Additionally, McMurry Student Affairs Office provided auxiliary support for marketing and materials. Finally, local vendors HTeaO and 5 Star Nutrition will be present at the event to assist with refreshments, with 5 Star Nutrition also running a raffle for attendees.

“There are many families that are affected by breast cancer. As Makona Men’s Fraternity at McMurry University, we strive to stay active throughout the community any way possible. By having our annual Flamingo 5K, this is our way of reaching out to inspire people to support those who are in need. Every donation matters and will have a lasting impact on those who are affected.” said Michael Tupa, event organizer and Makona Fraternity President.
