All Things Rush!
Rush season for Greek Life at McMurry is one of the most highly anticipated parts of the year! This is when students have the opportunity to find their sisterhood or brotherhood for life. They go through a specific process of Rush Tea, Coke or Smoker Parties, Invite-only Rush Parties, and it all leads up to the big day…Bid Day! This week, girls are in the process of rushing sororities such as Alpha Psi Alpha, Delta Beta Epsilon, Gamma Sigma, Pi Omega Phi, Theta Chi Lambda, and T.I.P. Next week, guys will be in the process of rushing fraternities such as Chi Omicron, KIVA, Ko Sari, and Makona. After busy weeks of all things rush, everyone has Thanksgiving break! Jumping right back into it, Bid Day is the evening of November 30, the Sunday after break.
Going through the rush process and finding my sisters for life has been one of the highlights of my time at McMurry so far! It can be stressful meeting so many new people and having to decide on what is best for you, but I don’t regret it one bit and would recommend it to anyone. Something I have learned as a freshman rushing, and even now as a junior with the role of President, is that you do not have to follow your friends. I completely understand the urge to, but you do not have to join the same sorority/fraternity as your friend just so that you can be in the same club together. I have friends who are not in the same sorority as I am, and it has changed nothing! The goal of rushing to find your family and your home away from home, so do what feels right! Also, it is important to keep your options open and not get set on a certain group early on. Like Greek Life’s motto says, keep an open heart and open mind.
As President of Gamma Sigma, I’m so excited for this rush season because it’s a time when so many amazing men and women get to find their place and their people. Rush isn’t just about joining a sorority or fraternity; it’s about finding a community that helps you grow, supports you, and celebrates who you are. I cannot wait to see people experience the joy I experienced on Bid Day! I asked two other sorority Presidents about why they are looking forward to rush.
First, senior Carmen Velasquez from Delta Beta Epsilon stated, “I’m so excited for this rush season because it’s my last year getting to experience it, and I can already tell this group of incoming girls is full of strong leaders. I’m looking forward to seeing how they’ll challenge each and every one of us and push us to grow, all while leaving their own mark on each club. It’s been amazing to see how, year after year, Greek life brings everyone together and strengthens our bonds, especially between those of us who are about to graduate. I’m sure it’s a bittersweet feeling for all of us, knowing how much we’ve contributed to the growth, positive changes, and stronger student connections within Greek life. It truly makes the whole experience that much more meaningful and fun!”
Lastly, Senior Jazzmin Williams from Theta Chi Lambda said, “The most exciting part of rush is meeting all the wonderful girls who are interested in joining a sisterhood and getting a different experience here on campus with Greek life. What I am looking forward to is adding more wonderful men and women into Greek life and expanding our sisterhoods and brotherhoods that we offer here on campus.”
