Celebrating National Transfer Student Week

Issue 54: October 30, 2026

Transferring college is a major step, but McMurry makes sure students don’t have to navigate it alone! McMurry’s goal is to make the transition and move for transfer students as easy as possible. Last week, McMurry helped celebrate National Student Transfer Week, an annual event to celebrate transfer students and the staff and faculty who support them.

The University has been recognized by Phi Theta Kappa, an International College Honor Society, as a “Most transfer-friendly college”. Phi Theta Kappa has also recognized McMurry for its transfer-friendly admission process, value, and student experience.

To celebrate our students and faculty, the War Hawk Success Center sponsored a pop-up with popcorn, coffee and donuts, and pugs and pups. The pugs and pups event was visited by Abilene Therapy Dogs, a local organization that visits community events across Abilene. Transfer student Alex Welch attended the coffee and donuts and stated, “I got to talk with other students about where they transferred from, and what brought them to McMurry. It’s fun to see what brought us all to the same University!”

When asked why she is happy she transferred to McMurry, Welch stated, “McMurry has helped me excel in theatre in ways I wouldn’t have been able to at a smaller junior college, or a bigger graduate university. The opportunities I have been given while in the McMurry theatre department have broadened my experience and deepened my understanding of theatre. Just the information and resources alone have made my time at McMurry worth it.” Her advice to any new transfer students is to participate in campus activities! She says, “It’s so easy to become a recluse in your dorm. Being a part of campus life really helps you connect with other students and make friends. Go to the events, meet the people, make friends!”

Transfer students bring a variety of experiences and perspectives to McMurry, helping make the campus community stronger. As Welch encourages, getting involved and connecting with others can make all the difference in feeling at home. For new War Hawks, the next step is to get involved, meet new people, and make the most of their McMurry experience!
